Why I made it

I didn't make this balm to start a business.

My son was 13 months old. His skin was dry, rough and irritated, and every lotion we tried made him flinch.

So I made something in our kitchen I could trust on him. Then on me.

I would not sell what we would not use.

How we use it

1. Warm a little. A fingertip is enough. Hold it between your palms until it softens.
2. Press it in. Don't rub hard. Press it over dry, rough spots: elbows, knees, cheeks, hands.
3. Let it stay. It's rich on purpose. A thin layer keeps skin feeling comfortable for hours.

When: after the bath while skin is still slightly damp, and at bedtime. That's why ours lives by the bed.

Patch-test first. For babies under 6 months, or skin that is broken or weeping, check with your pediatrician or clinician first.

What's inside, and what you'll feel

• Raw shea butter + raw cocoa butter: rich, melt-on-contact moisture that stays put.
• Colloidal oats: a classic for dry, itchy-feeling skin. Soothes the feel of dryness.
• Chamomile + calendula: gentle botanicals traditionally used for calm, comfortable-feeling skin.
• Marshmallow root: soft plant mucilage for a smooth, slippy feel.
• Aloe vera: cooling comfort.
• Sweet almond oil + vitamin E: softness and slip.
• Plantain, burdock root + neem: traditional botanical skin herbs.

No artificial fragrance. Its soft scent comes from chamomile, including a small, subtle amount of chamomile essential oil. Small batch. Handmade.

Questions parents ask

Is it gentle enough for my baby?

It was made for my son, and every ingredient is listed above. There's no artificial fragrance, just a soft hint of chamomile from a small amount of chamomile essential oil. Patch-test first. For newborns, or skin that's broken or weeping, ask your pediatrician.

Will it sting?

It's a rich butter balm, not a thin lotion, with no artificial fragrance. It's made to be gentle on skin that already feels uncomfortable. Every skin is different, so patch-test first.

Can I use it on eczema-prone skin?

Yes. Many of our families use it for comfort and lasting moisture on dry, eczema-prone skin. It isn't a medicine, so keep following your clinician's plan.

It's so rich. Will it feel greasy?

Warm a little and press it in. A fingertip covers a lot. It stays on skin longer than lotion, and that's the point.

Nut allergy?

It contains shea butter and sweet almond oil. Please check with your clinician if anyone in your home has a tree-nut allergy.

4 oz or 8 oz?

Get the 4 oz to try it. Get the 8 oz if you use it daily on more than one person. It works out to about $6.11 per oz, compared with $7.25 per oz for the 4 oz.

It arrived soft or melted.

Butters soften in warm transit. Put the jar in the fridge for 15–30 minutes and it will firm up again. The balm itself is unchanged.
